Wet 'n Wild Wednesday Weather Warning - Heavy rain and High Winds A weather warning released on the site earlier today is still in force. A deepening area of low pressure to the southwest will track close to the island. Over the last few model runs there has been a slight decrease on wind speeds as the track of the low stays more offshore. But having said that, this could wobble back closer to Ireland closer the time and significantly increase windspeeds. The day will start of wet and windy over the southern half of the country, and perhaps some early brightness in more northern areas. The frontal system really activates during the morning and pushes north over the country bringing very heavy rainfall and spot flooding. The heavy rain should move northwards quite quickly and it doesn't hang over the country for too long but the intensity is looks significant. Rainfall totals of over 50mm on higher ground and between 20 to 35mm in places on lower ground. Winds will be another feature and will be strong to gale force with gusts in access of 80kmh along some eastern coastal counties for a time. With trees in full leaf, it is very possible small branches may come down onto roads and especially take care on back roads. The front will clear from the south during the morning and it turns brighter with winds veering southerly and decreasing for a time for the afternoon with heavy showers. The uncertainty is the low pressure centre and where it will track, if it comes close to the southwest, it with will bring gale forces southerly winds and gust over 100kmh but if it stays offshore, more of Connaught will see severe winds on the coasts. More rain is expected across Munster and Connaught through the late afternoon and this will again be heavy with spot flooding here.
