- With todays excitment over (for me anyway - one loud thunder clap ???), just thought I'd start thread on the potential weather 'event' particularly for the southern and eastern areas.
The incoming Atlantic system is just now making its presence felt along the south coast with high level cloud (and with rain showing up on radar offshore). Models still indicating potential for sustained and potentially heavy rain for a 24 to 36 hour period.
In addition, the potentially heavy rain combined with high tides and strong to gale force east to north east winds could lead to a risk of coastal flooding along exposed coasts.
Another interesting weather period to watch.
- Was out for a drive on the coast after tea with the kids, big high tides tonight and quite high for the next couple of nights, looks like a ship has come into the bay to take shelter from the impending gales.
- Hires is interesting. Shows 24hr accumulation of 60mm for wicklow/dublin hills at the end of the run. Still a few hours of rain on top of that before its passed.
- I have a thread already going on this DOC stating the warnings last couple of days now. I'll use this thread you created as the current weather conditions for the next couple of days and merge the threads after the event passes.

I'll use this thread you created as the current weather conditions......
Sorry Karl. That's really what I intended by starting this thread - a thread for posting current conditions, etc., to leave your forecast/warning thread 'clean'.
Rain has kicked off here in the last half hour. 0.2mm
- 6.9 c light rain atm
it seems wicklow's going to take much of this heavy rain, can only pray 60mm does'nt come, thats the critical point at which the aughrim river floods, looks like a very busy day deploying the sandbags!
5 c dp

overnight low of 6.4 c @ 12.00am

Today/tomorrow may only be a starter! If you were to believe the GFS this morning, Sunday through to Tuesday also looks like a very wet (if not wetter) period.
- think am going to need a boat Doc ???
- Sunny & bright with patchy high cloud
Temp 5.9°C in a gentle NE'ly breeze
Barometer 986.63 hPa : Falling slowly -0.50 hPa/hr

Recent Gust of 40.2KMH
- I think this system was over cooked by the models... hard to see where 30mm is going to fall, let alone 60mm. It will be gone by this time tomorrow.
- Orographic lift will aid in increasing the totals over mtns Dan but the persistence of the rain will only add to overall totals. Let's hope the models have overcooked it but it has been consistent especially over hilly areas. We will soon find out.
- True, the Wicklow mountains will sponge up a good bit of rain, but the radar returns are quite weak for such a system that was touted by the models to be a big drencher. It seems the worst is in over England and S Wales... good luck to it! I was looking at the satellite developments throughout the afternoon and early evening yesterday and the mass of cloud seemed to stay offshore over the Celtic Sea - perhaps the low track was expected further north? I see the centre is nearly into NW France at present... France is probably going to get the worst along with SW England and Wales. Probably no harm as they have had it dry for a long time there and reservoir levels are well down.
- Winds really a howling here now, sent the Dogs Kennel across the Garden.
- Some serious rain on the M50.
Lots of standing water on the M/N11 also.

- Been absolutely lashing down here now for the last hour following light rain since 9am... The wind is really picking up too, some limbs blown off trees locally here. 6.4° and dropping. Feels bitter out. Fire lighting time again! :cold:

- Yeah that station is always gone mad! ;D
- 20.4mm in Kill Village so far. I'm glad i live on a hill..
- Only 7.4mm here so far today.
I thought leaves would not be a factor this time of year but when out and about this morning there were a lot of new leaves (twigs, small branches and bloosom) blown off trees and on the roads.
- Moderate Rain still coming down here, being blown sideways by the strong winds, proper wild out there!

7.2C
- Some rain accumulations across the east now. Reports of trees down and partial flooded roads. I read on boards that there was 2 reported tornado's near Athboy, Co.Meath but it's an unconfirmed report at the moment.

7.0C
- 31.8mm here now and the garden is flooded. The small stream just down the road is now a raging torrent
- id say the hills are the culprit for that Ger. Similar returns of 20mm + across the Eadestown - Punchestown areas
Is your station protected much from the wind?
- Damp and windy.
7.2C
-
Is your station protected much from the wind?
Deffo orthographic lift enhancing my rainfall.
The temp sensor and tipping bucket are protected from the wind alright the anenometer is seperated from the station and is at a good height
- Just persistant light rain here. 10.8mm in total. Wonder will the more showery stuff over England and Wales make it across the Irish Sea?
-

Yeah that stuff has more punch in them, id say they will make it over tbh
- 6.8 c light rain
25.1mm
aughrim river's white water raffing territory!
- Those bands of heavy showers crossing the irish sea, could really ramp up the rain totals in the east

Barometer 986.56 hPa : Rising +0.63 hPa/hr

Yes more rain will arrive on the east and southeast coast later. The frontal stuff is just pivoting around the Low Pressure which is only slowly moving to the east. The rain bands and showery stuff will move to the southwest and south around the low at it's current location.
15.6mm here so far today
- Rain actually eased off there, but has returned again,
21.0mm
- A total of 7.6mm on the AWS so far from the front - my earlier estimate of 1.5mm before 10am read should have been 0.5mm. Rain was light to moderate throughout the day, only moderate between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.
Currently 6.2c with 4.8cDPs. Pressure is rising slightly once more, up 4hPa in the last few hours. Winds, N to NNW, 15mph. Max gust was this morning at 39mph.

Just as wet as october last. Over a much smaller area so not as much as an issue. Most of the small streams have become torrents.
- 23.1mm at Casement the highest of any Met station up to midnight, barely a drop here all day though, drizzle on and off since around 9pm but we've only had 2.5mm all day
- Steady rain now this morning. Looks like quite a 'rain train' feeding into the east coast which should at least give another couple of hours persistant rain.
2.6mm since midnight. Event total of 15.4c

Temp 8.7°C in a light NE'ly breeze

- Much Heavier Rain here now
- That rain is just clipping here. Sky is very dark just to my east atm.
- A further 13mm at Casement so far today taking the total to over 34mm, still seems to be more to come looking at the radar
Dry all day again here 8)
- Front has pepped up in places before it will finally move towards the southeast. LP is still anchored in place but should move more towards the eastern UK coast dragging the front back out into the Irish sea in the next few hours.
Just light rain here atm.
- Light to moderate rain.
8.2C
- All that rain has been passing to my west most of this afternoon. Only 4.4mm today (so far) since midnight. 7.3c atm after high today of 8.8c.
- The next batch of moderate rain is just arriving here in Newtown. looks like this batch will last even longer than the last. Rain gauge is out of action so no idea what my total is here.
- 8.0 c cloudy, some drizzle earlier
5.8 mm today so far
max of 9.8 c @ 5.42 pm
- There is still plenty of life left in this system>
- moderate rain
8.0mm

-
11.2mm and a storm total of 60.4mm
Very Impressive Ger indeed
8.2mm and a Storm total of 46.4mm here
- Lol. A combination of Wicklow/Blackstairs/Castlecomer Plateau doing a great job! A "storm" total of only 2.9mm so far!
(Thank God its not snow or I'd feel very left out. ;D)
Thats not to say that we dont get hit here by easterlies either. I can remember two very severe rainfall cases namely:
August '97 http://irelandsweather.com/forum/index.php/topic,155.msg2967.html#msg2967 (http://irelandsweather.com/forum/index.php/topic,155.msg2967.html#msg2967)
August '86 Hurricane Charley.
Subtle flow direction it seems can have a big bearing. This time the flow is well north of east and has a pretty good landtrack for me.
- A dry day apart from a mm overnight , it's brightened up well this evening but that strong Northerly wind feels very raw indeed , max of 10.6 c today .
- Can the date of this thread be extended by a day?
The rain is still going here in Greystones .
-
Can the date of this thread be extended by a day?
From Met E forecast this morning (on radio at least) we could extend to the middle of next week! :D
Damp this morining with spots of light rain. 0.6mm since midnight. Total of 4.8mm yesterday.
5.8c atm.
- This event is now over.
April CC thread reopened. :)
- Will lock this just for a day or two to get things moving on the CC thread again.
Will be reopened for stats then.
